I bought a new adventure motorcycle: the wise choice.
I bought one of this motorcycles on my Short List:
Triumph 900
BMW GS 850
Honda CRF11000 Africa Twin
Yamaha Tenere 700
KTM 790 Adventure R
AJP PR7 Adventure
KTM 690 Enduro R
Husqvarna 701 Enduro R
Honda CRF300L
Buying a new motorcycle is never easy, because we all have our personal taste, personal needs, personal financial situation, physical constraints, riding level, etc
So like everybody else I started reading reviews and watching Youtube videos where professional riders do absolutely unbelievable stunts on adventure motorcycles.
Every brand has them now.
But I’ve tried to stay realistic, not looking at what motorcycles can do, but at what I could do if I bought that motorcycle.
Because it’s not what my adventure motorcycle can do, it’s what I can do on my adventure motorcycle.
All of these chart results change significantly depending if it’s me riding or one of these off-road immortals.
So I come across this question: what bike would I choose to ride this?
Yeah I would probably choose the lighter options on the list.
What about this?
The heavier bikes.
This makes sense and most adventure riders would have the same answer but it’s complicated.
Because the right answer to this question is a question: how far are they?
And this one is 2000 kilometers away in Africa, and this beautiful road is just 100 kilometers outside my house.
Would i still prefer to take the lighter bikes?
The short answer is yes!
I wanted something I could take not just off armor but to serious off-road riding and for serious off-road you need serious off-road tires and travel light so I had no use for the smoothness and load capacity of the heavier bikes.
Pushing 45 years old I wanted something I could pick up several times on my own so I have discarded the heavier bikes.
